About the Program
Founded in 1991 by three former Halifax County retired educators, Harvey Dillard, Gatha Richardson and the late Carter Hicks, the Mentor/Role Model Program began its service to the county of Halifax in the South Boston, Sinai, and Halifax Elementary Schools. By 1996, it was an incorporated agency serving all the elementary schools in the county and its middle and high school. The mentors in the program are community volunteers who desire to enrich the county by providing guidance and support to identified students in the public schools.
The mentor’s role is to ensure that every mentee experiences acceptance, stability, and consistency as they matriculate through the public education system provided by the county of Halifax.
Our mission: to guide, encourage and nurture the youth of Halifax County through effective mentors and role models in an organized program promoting good citizenship.
We serve students with identified needs who are in the public school system of Halifax County. These students are identified by the staff in the school or an agency of the county. Students may also be recommended by their parent or guardian.
